• What does Cycle do?

Cycle provides an instant reward for recycling on a mobile application. Cycle produced a technological solution for recycling systems through the utilization of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs). The consumer inserts a bottle or can into the machine and receives payment for their deposit through the mobile app. The user can divert their payment to a sustainable development project or charity of their choice. Our RVMs eliminate contamination and ensure that bottles and cans are 100% recycled. Cycle provides a platform for consumers to promote sustainable behavior and make a tangible difference in their ecosystem.

  • How did Cycle start?

Cycle was co-founded by five college students at the University of Miami with the simple idea of rewarding people for recycling in an app. Since their conception in November 2018, Cycle has launched a pilot program at the University of Miami and are currently expanding to other universities around the country.

  • What problems does Cycle solve?

Cycle solves the global, institutional, and consumer problems that are often associated with our broken recycling system. Globally, plastic and other harmful materials threaten ecological health. 90% of all plastic never gets recycled, while 8 billion tons of bottles get dumped in the oceans. At the consumer level, there is a lack of recycling knowledge that oftentimes leads to contamination. With only a five percent contamination rate, contaminated recycling is sent to the landfill and the institution that collected the contaminated product is charged a fine. This leads to institutions throwing away their recycling systems all together. Cycle eliminates contamination and ensures that our collected recyclables get recycled.

  • What is Cycle’s mission?

Cycle seeks to create solutions that empower consumers and protect the environment. Cycle’s first goal is to improve college recycling programs through the use of RVMs paired with our mobile application. Our community of recyclers is excited about sustainability and is actively raising awareness by participating in our environmental solutions. Cycle is dedicated to improving public and ecological health through the funding of sustainable development projects chosen by the Cycle community.

  • How do Cycle Points work?

Users receive Cycle Points within the Cycle application for recycling plastic or aluminum bottles. Cycle Points represent the value of the material that was deposited in our RVM. Cycle Points can be diverted to sustainable development projects and charities of the user’s choosing.

  • How does Cycle benefit young people?

Cycle allows young people to join an environmental coalition through the gamification of recycling. Cycle empowers young people to easily make a difference in someone else’s life by closing the economic and societal loop.

  • How does Cycle benefit schools?

Material sales from the RVMs can be used to fund student groups, promote sustainability initiatives, or pay back the institution that allows for the placement of our RVMs. Our RVMs eliminate contamination fees associated with institutional scale recycling. Cycle assists institutions in reaching both their landfill diversion rate goals and recycling rates. A ubiquitous RVM ecosystem has been shown to increase recycling rates by upwards of 90%.
